Fujifilm X-T5: A Comprehensive Guide for Potential Buyers

In this article

When Fujifilm released the X-T5 on November 25, 2022, we were one of the first in the queue as we wanted to experience a high-megapixel APS-C sensor. This was simply not GAS, as we had only months earlier purchased an X-T4, which was comfortably doing everything we needed. However, with 40 megapixels for landscapes in such a compact and stylish design, we simply needed to see what it could do and more to the point, could do what we needed for our photography.

Cameras can do almost anything these days, and yet we are drawn for whatever reason to certain manufacturers. This could be because of the lens choice, the format, the resolution, the familiarity, the list goes on. Ultimately, we settle down and see past all the bells and whistles and concentrate on the tool, in this case, a camera, does it do everything we need for our photography?

We won’t focus on the specs of the camera, as you can read more about them here along with some insightful reviews on X-mount lenses. We’ll simply provide our opinion on the camera for the type of work we do, which is mainly landscape photography.

Performance and Handling

In landscape photography, quick focus isn’t always necessary because scenes typically don’t change rapidly. However, achieving sharp images is crucial as it ensures clarity and detail in the final photos. Surprisingly, the combination of the camera and the lenses performed exceptionally well in this aspect, surpassing my initial expectations.

We were pleasantly surprised by the sharpness and clarity of the images, especially considering the previous models. The X-T5 not only delivered superior image quality but also allowed me to extract more details during post-processing. This meant we could crop images without sacrificing too much pixel information, resulting in pleasant outcomes suitable for various purposes.

Exclusive X-T5 Experience

For the past year, I’ve relied exclusively on the X-T5 for photography needs, except when testing other camera models like the GFX series. In every situation, the X-T5 proved to be a capable and reliable tool. One notable improvement was the reintroduction of the flip-out screen from the X-T3. This feature was particularly beneficial for landscape photography, as it allowed me to easily shoot in vertical orientations without needing to contort my body or strain my neck to view the back screen.

Grip and Handling

While using the X-T5, one minor observation was that the grip on the camera body could have been larger for better ergonomics, especially during handheld shooting. However, since we primarily used the camera on a tripod, this slight limitation did not significantly impact my overall experience. Additionally, attaching a Smallrig L bracket addressed this concern effectively, making it more comfortable to handle.

Despite this, individuals with larger hands might find the Smallrig cage more suitable. However, it’s worth noting that while the cage doesn’t function as an L-bracket, a workaround involving rigging an Arca plate to the cage can achieve a similar effect. Personally, if Smallrig were to manufacture an L bracket with a grip matching the cage’s size, I would be among the first to purchase it.

Lenses

The lenses I used alongside the X-T5 included the FUJIFILM XF 10-24mm f/4 R OIS WR Lens, the FUJIFILM XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4 R LM OIS, the FUJIFILM XF 16mm f/2.8 R WR, and the FUJIFILM XF 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 R LM OIS WR. After extensive use and testing, I found that Fujifilm’s recommended lens list, released around the same time as the camera, wasn’t just a marketing tactic but genuinely optimized for the X-T5’s 40-megapixel sensor. The images produced with these lenses were notably sharper when zoomed in and even the straight-out-of-camera JPEGs exhibited enhanced crispness without being overly processed.

40MP APS-C X-Trans CMOS 5 HR BSI Sensor

The standout feature of the X-T5 is its 40-megapixel X-Trans 5 HR CMOS sensor, which is housed within a compact and lightweight body. Despite its small size, the camera doesn’t compromise on imaging performance. The improved image processing algorithm ensures exceptional results with intricate details throughout the native ISO range, catering to various shooting conditions.

Powerful Video Capabilities

The X-T5 boasts impressive video capabilities, allowing for internal recording of movies at resolutions up to 6.2K at 30 frames per second in 4:2:2 10-bit color depth. Additionally, it features a 4K HQ mode that oversamples 6.2K footage, resulting in superior 4K output quality. This higher video resolution not only provides exceptional clarity but also unlocks 2x digital zoom functionality within the camera, offering added versatility without compromising on quality.

External Raw Recording

For professionals and advanced users, the X-T5 supports both F-Log and F-Log2 recording options, with the latter offering an expanded dynamic range of 13+ stops. Furthermore, the camera can output 12-bit ProRes RAW and Blackmagic RAW via HDMI to compatible external recorders like Atomos and Blackmagic devices. This capability enhances workflow flexibility and ensures optimal image quality for post-production tasks.

425-Point Intelligent Hybrid AF System

The X-T5’s autofocus system is a standout feature, utilizing 425 phase-detection points for swift and accurate focusing. Notably, it now offers sensitivity down to -7 EV, making it highly effective in challenging low-light conditions. Backed by deep learning technology, the camera’s AI adaptive algorithm enhances subject detection and tracking, making it suitable for capturing fast-moving subjects such as animals, athletes, vehicles, and more.

In-Body Image Stabilization

With in-body image stabilization (IBIS), the X-T5 minimizes the impact of camera shake, ensuring sharper images even when shooting handheld or in unstable conditions. The 5-axis sensor-shift stabilization system reduces camera shake by up to 7 stops, making it beneficial for slower shutter speeds and challenging lighting situations. Additionally, digital image stabilization can be activated during video recording to further enhance stability, particularly useful for handheld videography.

Pixel Shift Multishot

For photographers seeking excellent detail and resolution, the X-T5’s Pixel Shift Multishot feature is a game-changer. By precisely shifting the sensor, the camera can automatically capture 20 separate frames with a single shutter press. These frames are then combined using specialized software to quadruple the camera’s resolution, resulting in a detailed 160-megapixel file. This capability is ideal for commercial photography, digital archiving, and capturing static subjects with unparalleled image quality.

Built for Speed

In terms of speed and responsiveness, the X-T5 is designed to excel. It offers a top electronic shutter speed of 1/180,000 second and a maximum mechanical shutter speed of 1/8000 second, ensuring precise capture of fast-moving subjects. With a minimal lag time of just 35 milliseconds, the camera delivers an almost instantaneous response when the shutter release is pressed. Additionally, it supports continuous shooting at up to 15 frames per second with the mechanical shutter or 20 frames per second with the electronic shutter, ensuring that no fleeting moment is missed.

Film Simulation Modes

Fujifilm’s renowned Film Simulation modes add a creative touch to your photography, allowing you to replicate the distinct look and feel of various film types. From classic film stocks like Provia, Velvia, and Astia to cinematic options like Eterna Cinema and Eterna Bleach Bypass, these modes provide photographers with versatile tools to achieve their desired visual aesthetics directly in the camera.

Enhanced Body Design

The X-T5’s ergonomic design enhances user experience and comfort during extended shooting sessions. The large OLED electronic viewfinder (EVF) offers a crisp 3.69-million-dot resolution, providing bright, clear, and detailed viewing. With 0.8x magnification, the EVF ensures an easy-to-view image, further improved by reduced parallax and distortion compared to previous models. The 100 frames per second (fps) refresh rate results in virtually blackout-free shooting, enhancing overall usability and image composition.

The camera’s 3.0-inch 1.84-million-dot LCD touchscreen is intuitive to use, facilitating easy menu navigation, playback, and touchscreen-based controls. The tilting design of the screen adds versatility, allowing photographers to shoot comfortably from high and low angles without compromising visibility. Additionally, the X-T5 is equipped with a durable NP-W235 battery, providing an impressive capacity of up to 680 frames per charge. The mechanical shutter is rated for 500,000 actuations, ensuring long-term reliability and performance.

Connectivity

For seamless connectivity and data transfer, the X-T5 features a range of ports and wireless capabilities. The micro-HDMI port allows for video output to external recorders or monitors, while the USB 3.2 Gen 2 port supports tethering, data transfer, and in-camera battery charging. A 3.5mm external microphone port enhances audio recording control, ensuring high-quality sound capture for video projects. The Fujifilm X-T5 is priced at a suggested retail cost of $1699, placing it competitively within its part. Interestingly, this price point aligns closely with the launch price of its predecessor, the X-T4, maintaining the surface in Fujifilm’s pricing strategy for its X-T series.

Notably, the X-T5 comes in at a lower price point compared to another Fujifilm model, the X-H2, by $300. It’s worth mentioning that both the X-T5 and the X-H2 share the same sensor, offering users the opportunity to choose a camera model based on their specific preferences and budget considerations. This pricing strategy ensures that photographers and videographers have access to high-quality imaging technology at varying price ranges within Fujifilm’s product lineup.
